Queen Elizabeth II
We were saddened to hear of the passing of our devoted and gracious Queen Elizabeth II
Here are some wise words she delivered on a visit to Sandringham WI, of which she was a member for many years:
“Reflecting on a century of change it is clear that the qualities of the WI endure. The continued emphasis on patience, friendship, a strong community focus, and considering the needs of others, are as important today as they were when the group was founded all those years ago. Of course, every generation faces fresh challenges and opportunities.
As we look for new answers in the modern age, I for one prefer the tried and tested recipes, like speaking well of each other and respecting different points of view; coming together to seek out the common ground and never losing sight of the bigger picture. To me these approaches are timeless, and I commend them to everyone.”

WInnie, the Queen's errant corgi has been hidden!
We hope a member of the WI or the general public, (committee of WBWI excluded), will locate him/her! WInnie was created by our president, Prue. She has composed a clue to help you in your search:
"A prize awaits in a tree
Quercus ilex is its name
In West Bridgford Park it's plain.
A Centenary Plaque held by a pin,
Will you find WInnie within?"
Happy Searching!!

Welcome to 2022
New Programme now on line Programme 2022
Last night we had a most fascinating introduction to the Orkney Islands by Barbara Deavin.
We heard about her experiences as a teacher on Strathsay. A whole "other world" existence.
Idyllic on a calm day, the elements making life turbulent and unpredictable on a stormy day - quite frequent!

We have been fortunate to return to meetings in St Paul's now.
Rather depleted in numbers, but happy to be together again even if initially masked, sanitised, and seated apart!
Also Coffee and biscuit (wrapped), at the last two meetings.
Next meeting 25 October
Farmer Barnes' Dairy
Talk by Jane Barnes on Dairy Farming and Cheese Making
There will be cheese for sale.
We are arraging an outing to Doddington Hall on 30 November for their Christmas decorations with the theme "Secret Gardens".
Well supported so far, but there may be one or two places available
www.doddingtonhall.com
July Maureen Ake talked about Spinning and Dying (change to scheduled speaker)
August Lesley Bensley presented the History of the Oxo Cube
September John Whitfield introduced us to the Mitford Sisters and their family
So, picking up the programme from where we had to cease meeting in February 2019!
Entertainment by Clive Rudd, originally scheduled for June, will now be held on 6 December
An outing to Floral Media at Caunton, was enjoyed by a group of 30 members, friends, and a good contingent from Edwalton WI. Luckily no adverse affects reported following coach travel! It was glorious weather to enjoy the gardens and we were wonderfully hosted by Paula and Steve. Flower arranging demonstration by Paula, and Steve had prepared a fantastic meal for us to enjoy.

Unfortunately we were unable to hold the carefully planned meeting on 28 September. New restrictions meant that this was not possible despite following safety rules and regulations. So we have missed a meeting on Soap Making which would have been pertinent to the present situation??!!
There will be no further meetings this year, and we are planning the Annual Meeting to take place without "meeting"!
We did hold a raffle which was planned for the September meeting and the winner was Chris Bemrose.
We hope to hold further raffles on future meeting dates, and a special one at Christmas!
Our programme for 2021 is now complete and hasbeen put up on this site. You should have received it attached to an email from Joy. So don't lose it! However, who knows whenwe can hold a meeting again. We are at the mercy of the "Virus" ..... and our ability to contain/live with it.
Please follow guidance and keep safe.....

We Planted A Tree!
West Bridgford Park - 17 December 2015
Posted on 22 January 2016
On 17 December West Bridgford WI planted a tree in West Bridgford Park to commemorate 100 years of the WI. It's a Holly or Evergreen Oak (Quercus Ilex).
Already the plaque has been broken off, but a member's husband has screwed it back on to the post. Many thanks to Park Staff who dug a big hole, it gets quite stony lower down! They added compost and surrounded it with stakes to secure the tree. We need to raise a little more money for its upkeep etc, but Sue has offered to have another Garden Party in the summer.
Thanks to those who turned up to mark the occasion - do visit it when the weather is more clement. See more photo in the gallery.

Wreath Making at Attenborough
8 December 2015
7 members made wreathes at Attenborough Nature Reserve. We were joined by 2 other ladies who were desperate to join a course, but all were booked up, so we enjoyed their company too.
First we teased whips of willow into a wreath shape, then these were decorated with greenery, berries, etc. We were pleased/amazed with the results and some are shown here. For more photos see Gallery /photo-gallery.html_
